Telefónica Tech, the operator's technology and cybersecurity unit, has built a new virtual assistant to handle digital customer service for Bizum, Spain's dominant peer-to-peer payment app.

Bizum is embedded in nearly every major Spanish bank's own app, making it one of the most widely used pieces of financial infrastructure in the country. Millions of transfers move through it daily, which means the customer service layer sitting behind it is not a low-stakes surface to experiment on.

“Millions of transfers move through it daily, which means the customer service layer sitting behind it is not a low-stakes surface to experiment on.”

A modest deployment on critical infrastructure

On paper, this is a modest deployment: a support bot handling routine service queries. But the buyer is the part worth paying attention to. Telefónica Tech is not a startup testing agentic tools in a low-risk corner of the business, it is a major operator's technology and cybersecurity arm shipping an AI agent directly into financial infrastructure used daily by tens of millions of people.

That combination, critical infrastructure plus a large, risk-conscious enterprise as the deploying party, is exactly the kind of signal worth tracking for anyone gauging how fast agentic AI is actually moving into regulated, high-trust sectors in Spain rather than staying confined to marketing pilots and proofs of concept.
